Situated on the estuary of the River Arade, Portimão is known for its excellent sandy beaches with warm, calm waters, which make it a very seductive holiday destination. Portimão has a long fishing tradition, and you can visit the excellent restoration of an old factory, the Portimão Museum.
It's in the riverside area that you can savour grilled sardines, followed by a sea walk by the Marina. Just six kilometres from Portimão is the fishing village of Alvor, where the streets of white houses and colourful boats retain their charm. At the highest point, some parts of the castle walls remain, but the highlight is the Mother Church with its profusely carved 16th century portico and the panorama that can be seen from the churchyard over the sea and the Ria, which has a special charm at dawn when absolute tranquillity reigns.
