Situated on the estuary of the River Arade, Portimão is known for its excellent sandy beaches with warm and calm waters, which make it a very seductive holiday destination.

Portimão has a long fishing tradition, where you can see and visit the excellent restoration of an old factory the Portimão Museum.
It is in the riverside area that you can taste the grilled sardines, followed by a maritime promenade by the Marina.

Only six kilometres from Portimão, is the fishing village of Alvor where it retains its charm in the streets of white houses and the colourful boats.

At the highest point, there are still some parts of the castle walls, but the main church, with its elaborately carved 16th century portico, and the panorama from the churchyard overlooking the sea and the lagoon, have a special charm at dawn, when absolute tranquillity reigns.

But to get a complete idea of the Portimão area, you have to appreciate it from every perspective. For example, on a boat trip along the coast to discover beaches inaccessible by land and to admire the rock formations.
